D- Day

For the past 10 weeks we have been staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Perth, let me just tell you what and absolute saviour it has been for us over this period.
RMH Perth is a 47 room hotel that is completely funded and costs $Zero for regional families to stay at! Not only is this a bed that you do not have to organise, pay for or stress about check out times etc it is a place that supplies breakfast and dinner every day (again for free) along with a brilliant games room, roof top garden, in house school and amazing caring staff and volunteers!

All of this is funded through fundraising, sponsorship and grants and one of the many fundraising effort they conduct each year is a 226m (51 Storey’s) abseil off the tallest building in Perth, the Central Park Building.
This coming September, Jeldi along with her Uncle Noel and Jetts Gym legends Brad Scott & Kirstan Harrison have put their hands up to take the plunge, but first they must raise a minimum of $4400.
Hit this link ad check out the event, if you can spare a couple of dollars, anything then drop a couple of bucks in and leave the team some words of encouragement!

Cory has been doing absolutely amazing and we have come to expect nothing less! Although we have encouraged him that it is not only ok to have down days, but it is also important to have them, he simply just has not. I have been watching a lot of videos in recent times of high level athletes and “celebrities” that have endured a similar injury/ disability as him and I have not yet found one that does not have that defeated look in their eyes and a very deflated demeanour. Cory has not had this and while I am obviously biased, I am astounded every day at his positive, determined and committed approach to getting his life back to a point that is the best it can be.

Cory’s rehabilitation has been coming along in leaps and bounds with several hours every day focussed on stretching and mobility exercises designed to build back the strength and help the neuropathic pathways to relearn where they are and what everything does.

Stretching before physio

We are amazed at some of the things that Cory has been able to achieve in such a short time. For example on the 5th of January Cory had the most miniscule amount of movement in his big toe of his left foot and that was it below the waist, then able to jump on a trampoline in physio only 8 weeks later!  The human body is a truly remarkable thing!

House mods are another tick in the box, with the initial talks of knocking down walls to open up the bathroom/ toilet areas, being replaced with several simple rails and some OT chairs instead, we are very thankful for that!

Over the past few weeks we have been systematically taking Cory out of the hospital and more and more, back to RMH for dinner or even just for a couple of hours a day to watch a movie or chill in a park and last Sunday he even ventured back to his first Super Series at Westside BMX Club!
We were really unsure of how Cory would go in such a big crowd and not being able to be out on the track himself, but he really enjoyed his day watching Fliss and some of his mates.

A big thank you to Kishani, Dave and the entire team at Westside BMX Club for making our day so easy, with a car bay reserved inside the facility on a hard surface and even a tent set up trackside for him to be able to enjoy the day in the shade!

After 10 short weeks here in PMH with the absolutely wonderful staff here, we are being discharged tomorrow, 9th March and will spend a couple of weeks in RMH coming to PMH as an outpatient to continue the physio and rehab sessions that have been so vital to Cory’s progress.

Whilst we are not “leaving” the rehab team, we are leaving the wonderful nurses and staff at PMH (Ward 7 Teen) and we are very thankful and grateful of the care and friendship that they have shown not only Cory, but all of us.

Thanks Ward 7 Teen, you guys are amazing!

Before Cory can leave he will need to undergo another ASIA test, in Cory’s last ASIA test he had made some more small progress with a little sensory improvement in some areas and some increase in strength, but feeling for the most part remains the same.

Today Cory hit another major goal walking the length of the physio gym 4 times, then walking with crutches from the I-Rehab Gym to the Physio Gym then all the way back to his room, I would estimate this to be about 300m and all after doing 11 minutes on the treadmill in the harness, then a further 5 minutes completely under his own steam!

Cory has now set himself a long term goal of walking 5kms completely unaided on the 8th of September 2018, exactly one week before Jeldi and Team Nerve Get Some descend the Central Park Building for RMH!
